The Boom in Realistic Paintball Guns
by Robert Johnson
I have been playing paintball for about 8 years and within the past year I have noticed a craze with military replica paintball markers. In fact I have also been hit with the craze and own a Miltec MT-G3 paintball gun. I believe the current boom can be related to the War Against Terrorism for the sole fact that most of the paintball community is male and I can confidently say that at least 90% of the male population is fascinated with warfare.
Many scenario games have gone towards more realism because it is becoming increasingly popular. It has gone so far as paintball mines, grenades, MediVac's and even the ever popular LAW Rocket. It looks as if the scenario paintball community is becoming more geared toward realism. Scenario games back in the day were silly and deliberately fun. Many members from Team BlackList Scenario Paintball Team have been around as long as scenario paintball itself! I have heard stories of clown costumes, Elvis impression costumes, Matrix costumes and many more crazy stories of how scenario paintball used to be geared toward stupid fun. Hawk from BlackList expressed to me that many of the games that were geared toward fun were more enjoyable then the military style games. It is concern from many of the older paintballer gurus that turn to realism might turn off some people from Scenario Paintball because the rulebook is becoming ever thicker with more complicated rules.
The realistic feel of a Scenario Paintball game is an incredibly feeling. That is if you have a good coordinator. GoldDog from
Tactical Paintball hosted one of the best games I have ever played. It brought the MilSim to Paintball in a way I have never seen.
The question is, Will paintball start to fall with the age of realism? No, I don't think so.
